She did WHAT with her gift money? – By Laurie Itkin

Good morning, SOTGC readers. I recently met a 22-year-old woman who surprised me.  Her name is Becky Rudin.  She told me how much money she had made buying and selling TESLA stock.  (Incidentally, there are lots of young women who trade stocks, including 16-year-old former Desperate Housewivers actress Rachel Fox who has a blog called Fox on Stocks.)

What surprised me was how young Becky was when she started investing (only 13) and what motivated her to take her Bat Mitzvah money and not SPEND it on lots of stuff or SAVE it.  There is a big difference between SAVING and INVESTING and she did the latter.  How many 13-year-old girls do you know who  have done that?

For those of you not familiar with Jewish culture, the Bat Mitzvah typically occurs when a girl is 12 and signifies she is entering adulthood and is morally and ethically responsible for her actions.

In Becky’s case, she bought mutual funds.  “I always had the intuition to invest my money, but I just wasn’t going about it the right way back when I was 13,” she explained. “In fact, I lost most of my Bat Mitzvah money when the market crashed in 2008, and it only just got back to where it was when I put it in. For a seven year investment, that’s not the kind of return I want, so I took the money out and now I’m looking at individual stocks and options to generate some income and have more control over my investment choices. I wasn’t a finance major or anything, so it has been really fun for me to learn the ropes and become well-versed in something I didn’t know about before.”

Becky plans to continue growing her portfolio and is excited about learning conservative options strategies to take control of her finances.  In exchange for helping me write a chapter in my upcoming book about women and investing, I invited her to go through my three-month stock and options trading program at no charge (a $450 value).  Becky is co-authoring a chapter on young women’s views on money and investing entitled, “What Did You Do With Your Bat Mitzvah Money?” and is excited to begin interviewing young women for the book.

Becky is a recent college graduate and owner/operator of the website, The Sugar-Free Fairy, a food blog dedicated to creating delicious recipes for individuals following special diets.  She generates income through an affiliate agreement with Amazon. To support Becky’s endeavors, please subscribe to her website, “Like” her page on Facebook (search for Sugar Free Fairy), and buy products from Amazon.com by clicking on the Amazon link on her website.
